Mindfulness is simply focusing on the present. Research suggests the most mentally healthy people are the ones who can shift their focus to the here and now. Some people do this naturally; for others, it takes practice.

Here is a simple exercise to bring your brain back to the present:

  • What are three things I can see? (The bag. The hitter's back foot. The chalk line.)
  • What are three things I can feel? (My cleats in the dirt. The leather of my glove. The breeze.)

One of our golf clients does this between every shot and can now get through all six items in under thirty seconds. On the diamond, the natural window is between pitches—especially for infielders and outfielders, whose minds have the most time to drift. Try it during your next game and see if it works for you.
